Cook in a Curry is written by me, Maunika Gowardhan. I’m a private chef and freelance food writer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

I was born in Bombay, India where food was plentiful and I was also fortunate enough to sample varied cuisine in a subcontinent where every community has their unique style and methods of cooking which ultimately lend to the balance of flavours in Indian food. My core influences have always been the food my mother and grandmother cooked for us growing up, which was fresh, modern and developed our love as a family for good food. Coming to England made me perpetually homesick and I missed home cooked meals. With my spices at hand, I tried my best to emulate the kind of food I grew up eating. And I can proudly say that over the last 12yrs the flavours, textures and the variety of food I cook has gone down a treat with clients, family as well as friends.

The joy of making something from scratch, seeing the end result and also how good it tastes’ is what keeps me going. Everyday is a new ingredient – that’s my mantra! My food blog is based around dishes that inspire me and recipes that have been part of my family for generations. Everything & anything that I cook will be on this blog. I write as it helps me relive the process of cooking in my mind and culminate together how each dish was assembled. It offers a haven to share my cooking experience (a joyous one!) and also ingredients that are locally sourced and readily available.

I also do various food demos along side award winning chefs in the UK, freelance features and talk all things Indian food related on BBC Radio Newcastle. Working with international food brands, devising recipes for them to promote the best regional Indian cooking on offer.
